Flock (2024)

PLAYED ON: PC via PC Game Pass

Flock is one of those games that instantly makes you feel at ease and I definitely enjoyed playing it! From the get-go, I was swept up in the soothing experience of flying through vibrant landscapes, all while collecting the cutest little creatures to add to my growing flock. The premise is simple - you play as a bird rider, helping your aunt document the wildlife in the Uplands. It’s a game that’s all about the joy of exploration and the thrill of discovery, with a focus on taking things slow and enjoying the journey 😄

As you soar through the skies, the gameplay gradually unfolds into three distinct parts. The first involves observing and documenting the various creatures I encountered. There’s something incredibly satisfying about finding a new creature and figuring out which family it belongs to without relying on maps or markers. It made each discovery feel like a real accomplishment, especially when I had to use my ears and eyes to spot the more elusive, mythical creatures hidden in the environment.

The second part of the game adds a bit of a puzzle element, where I had to recover items stolen by these sneaky creatures called Burgling Bewls. This part was surprisingly fun and gave me a little break from the main task of creature hunting. Using sheep to lure out the Bewls and retrieve the stolen goods was a clever touch, and it was a nice change of pace from the more tranquil observation phase. Plus, finding hidden magazines with new clothing styles was a delightful bonus!

Then there's the creature flocking, which is mostly optional but too charming to pass up. I couldn’t resist trying to charm every creature I came across. The process of singing to them and convincing them to join my flock was a little mini-game in itself, and I loved watching my little group of creatures grow. Even though it didn’t add much to the overall gameplay, having them follow me around made the world feel more alive and connected.

Visually, Flock is simply beautiful. The art style is colourful and whimsical, with environments that are detailed without being overwhelming. Each creature I encountered had its own unique look, and the simple, adorable designs made them all the more endearing. The sound design is equally impressive - calming music that swells at just the right moments, and distinct creature calls that help me track down the more hidden species. Together, the visuals and sound create a relaxing atmosphere that’s easy to get lost in.

But yes, the game isn’t perfect. After a while, some parts started to feel a bit repetitive, especially when it came to identifying creatures. Since the game doesn’t penalize you for wrong guesses, it was tempting to just guess my way through instead of taking the time to figure things out. There were also a few minor quirks, like the camera sometimes struggling to keep creatures in focus, but they didn’t ruin the experience.

TSHC Score: 8/10

Overall, I loved playing this game. Flock offers a beautifully relaxing escape into a world of serene exploration and charming creature collecting, despite a few minor repetitive elements.
